The clone troopers were bred at cloning facilities on the ocean planet Kamino to serve the Galactic Republic. Under the command of the Jedi Order, they were the primary type of soldiers during the Clone Wars (which takes its name from the troopers) and fought against the Confederacy of Independent System’s army of battle droids. It is later revealed that the war was engineered by the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, secretly Chancellor Palpatine of the Republic, as part of his plan to take over the galaxy. The clone army was created by the Kaminoans at the request of Sidious’ apprentice and Separatist leader Count Dooku, using the bounty hunter Jango Fett as the template, and all clones were provided with inhibitor chips to make them obey Sidious’ orders. At the end of the Clone Wars, Sidious executed Order 66, branding all Jedi as traitors to the Republic and causing the clones to unwillingly betray and kill most of their Jedi Generals, effectively wiping out the Jedi Order. After the conversion of the Republic into the Galactic Empire by Sidious, clone troopers became more and more uncommon as they were slowly replaced by stormtroopers. The only notable clone legion within the Empire was the 501st Legion, dubbed “Vader’s Fist” due to being under the command of Darth Vader, and had prievously served under Vader’s Jedi identity, Anakin Skywalker, during the Clone Wars.
