The torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and in Madison Square Park in Manhattan from 1876 to 1882. Fundraising proved difficult, especially for the Americans, and by 1885 work on the pedestal was threatened by lack of funds. Publisher Joseph Pulitzer, of the New York World, started a drive for donations to finish the project and attracted more than 120,000 contributors, most of whom gave less than a dollar. The statue was built in France, shipped overseas in crates, and assembled on the completed pedestal on what was then called Bedloe’s Island. The statue’s completion was marked by New York’s first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland.

Creative Fun: Do you remember coloring as a kid? It has been a long time for most of us. With activity pages, kids will use their creativity to select colors and decorate. Depending upon age and skill, some will scribble a single color all over the paper, but others will pay close attention to staying within the lines and using several colors to make the dinosaur page a work of art. Regardless of the skill level of the artist, kids get creative and have a lot of fun.

Coloring Page Communities – Some websites offer very basic coloring pages for kids that can be printed off and colored. Others create interactive coloring pages that require children to work on the computer itself to color the images. Unlike the basic websites, the interactive coloring pages are often found on more complex websites that act as a full-fledged community. The coloring pages are only one of many things available to do on a particular site. On TheDollPalace.com, for example, dolls of every shape and size are available for children to play with and create, and then favorites are created into coloring pages. When dolls and coloring pages are complete, there are still interesting articles to read, personalities about the dolls to create, contests to take part in, and even forums and chats to visit to get to know other doll and coloring enthusiasts.

Just like reading stories in picture/illustrated books with their children, parents often use coloring pages to teach children and stretch their imagination. Standard coloring pages provide outlines within which children can color, but some art educators believe that free-form pages are an even better tool. A good example of these coloring books can be found at CreativeColoringBooks.
